LONDON, April 27 (Reuters) - Celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of renowned British naturalist David Attenborough start next week with a show delving deeper ‌into his milestone 1979 TV series "Life on Earth".

That programme - with its famous face-to-face encounters with ‌mountain gorillas in Rwanda - set the pattern for natural history documentaries in the decades that followed and helped establish him as one of the world's most authoritative voices on conservation.

The new show, "Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure", goes into the stories behind the series and includes more footage of a baby gorilla climbing on the presenter and of a lioness hunting.

Reading from the diary he kept during filming, Attenborough recalls how he and the ‌crew were detained by the Rwandan army and threatened in Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

His team talk about the challenge of setting up shoots abroad when letters took weeks to arrive, and worrying about getting precious film rolls back to Britain in metal cans.

There are also more details on their hunt for an Indian Ocean fish often called a "living fossil".

They finally got footage of the coelacanth after a fisherman caught it by accident and then tipped off the crew after releasing it. "It was the first time it was filmed alive, but ‌only just," Attenborough jokes in the new programme.

The series was game-changing, said Mike Gunton, creative director of the Natural History Unit at the BBC, who worked with Attenborough on later shows.

"All we really have done is remake 'Life on Earth'," Gunton told Reuters.

Attenborough was born on May 8, 1926, in London. His BBC career started in 1952 and two years later he got his big break with "Zoo Quest", which he ‌ended up presenting after the original candidate fell ill on their first shoot.

He moved into BBC management. Then, in his late 40s, he decided he wanted to return to making nature programmes and pitched the idea for "Life on Earth", a series ‌which would track the story of evolution.

Before three years of filming started he wrote all the scripts for the 13 hours of the show.

"He has, without doubt, defined natural history and how we see the world," the new show's producer/director, Victoria Bobin, said.

"Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure" ‌premieres on the BBC on Sunday.

There will also be a new series "Secret Garden", a concert in London and events at museums across Britain to celebrate the naturalist's birthday.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1957 Interview on “The Open Mind” Was 'Up There with the Gettysburg Address,' Says Host (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Alexander tells PEOPLE that his grandfather's 1957 interview with Martin Luther King Jr. "is up there with the Gettysburg Address"

  • In May, Alexander will launch the special "Mayors of the World" series in honor of the milestone anniversary

Years before the world would hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963,Richard D. Heffnersat down with the reverend in an episode of his then-newly establishedThe Open Mindtelevision program.

The February 1957 sit-down was many viewers’ “first encounter with Dr. King,” Heffner, a New York City native who also taught at Rutgers University, says in aretrospective introductionto the video shot decades later.

“I felt constrained to brief [viewers] on who he was; on what, indeed, his growing involvement was in what remains today perhaps our most confounding national issue: race relations in America,” he adds.

And now, in celebration of the program’s 70th anniversary in May, Heffner’s grandson Alexander — who took over as host in 2014 following his grandfather’s death in 2013 at age 88, is reflecting on the interview’s impact and how he’s continuing the show’s legacy all these years later.

“He wanted to give a platform to King in civil rights when that was not just out of the mainstream, it was completely devoid in the dialogue on TV in 1957,” Alexander, 36, tells PEOPLE, adding, “To my knowledge, it is the first broadcast appearance that King made on national television.”

In the episode, titled “The New Negro,” Richard sat down with King and a White South Carolina judge named Julius Waties Waring, “who was there kind of in a protector capacity,” Alexander says. (Waring's dissent in 1952's Briggs v. Elliott, in which he opined that "segregation is per se inequality," laid some groundwork for the Supreme Court's ruling in 1954's Brown v. Board of Education that led to the desegregation of public schools in the U.S.)

“He was the ambassador to King because not only was it completely irreverent and unconventional to have a discussion about civil rights,” he says. “The presence of this judge was making it arguably credible to the audience who was vouching for King.”

The conversation, Alexander notes, speaks to the crux of what the show has tried to do over its seven decades on air.

“To this day, to me, that interview is up there with the Gettysburg Address, and just King himself and what was illuminated through the conversation, to me, that's the America that we aspire to, the dream that became more publicized as King grew in recognition. But he really, in so many ways, gave birth to it onThe Open Mind,” Alexander says.

He adds, “And then over the years, I think that's the philosophy that he brought to the series and that I've attempted to carry forward, which is there's no topic that is too controversial if it's approached in a fair-minded way.”

Following two seasons of his seriesBreaking Bread with Alexander —where he spoke to and shared a meal with — various politicians on both sides of the aisle, Alexander is launching a new special called “Mayors of the World” in celebration ofThe Open Mind’s 70th anniversary.

Alexander Heffner with the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, while filming

“I'm just super psyched that I can introduce our viewers on PBS to, like King back in '57, some of these unknown leaders who are making a difference every day,” he says of the upcoming program, which premieres in May. “And whether Olivia Chow in Toronto becomes a Prime Minister of Canada or Mayor Dickens in Atlanta becomes President of the United States I can't say, but I can say that these are people committed to the public good.”

In addition to Dickens and Chow, “Mayors of the World” will feature Haris Doukas, the mayor of Athens; Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon; Stephan Keller, the mayor of Düsseldorf; Henriette Reker, the mayor of Cologne; Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami; Mike Duggan, the mayor of Detroit; Mario Desbordes, the mayor of Santiago; and Michelle Bachelet, ex-president of Chile.

  • White House communications director Steven Cheung called Kimmel a "s--- human being" after he did not apologize for the joke on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

  • "It was not by any stretch a call to assassination and they know that I've been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence in particular," Kimmel explained in his Monday monologue

The Trump administration is continuing to call forJimmy Kimmel's firing over a joke he made about first ladyMelania Trump.

On Tuesday, April 28, White House communications director Steven Cheung called theJimmy Kimmel Live!host, 58, "a s--- human being" after he didn't apologize for a joke he made about the first lady in a recent monologue.

The response from the White House arrives shortly after Kimmel addressedPresident Donald Trumpand Melania's concerns over an "obvious" joke he delivered during his Thursday, April 23 episode.

During his "alternative" White House Correspondents' Dinner segment last week, Kimmel joked that Melania had "a glow like an expectant widow."

"Jimmy Kimmel is a s--- human being for: #1. Making a disgusting joke about assassinating the President," Cheung claimed on X. "#2. Doubling down on that joke instead of doing the decent thing by apologizing. ABC needs to fire him immediately and he should be shunned for the rest of his life."

Kimmel's initial joke was geared at roasting the president and his family because "typically, somebody funny shows up" to the annual dinner, which he said wasn't the case this year. In response to the segment,Melania called for ABC to "take a stand"against Kimmel over what she alleged was "hateful and violent rhetoric" on his show.

On Monday, the president, 79, wrote on Truth Social that Kimmel should be "immediately fired by Disney and ABC," which has been the home ofJimmy Kimmel Live!since 2003.

"I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale," Trump wrote.

Kimmel insisted during his latest monologue that his remarks about the first lady could not have had an impact on the events at the actual White House Correspondents' Dinner two days later, when agunman opened fireat the event. "It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am," Kimmel said of Trump and the first lady, 56. "It was not by any stretch a call to assassination and they know that I've been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence in particular."

The late-night host did not apologize for his joke aimed at the Trumps, but opted to say "sorry" that "everyone in that room on Saturday went through that."

"Just 'cause no one got killed doesn't mean it wasn't traumatic and scary," he said, encouraging people to "come together."

Kimmel’s show was previously temporarily pulled from the air on Sept. 17 after comments he made aboutCharlie Kirk’sdeath in his opening monologue on Sept. 15. FCC ChairBrendan Carrthreatened to pursue action against the network over its criticism of Trump, and Kimmel latermade his return to the airwavessix days later.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC.

Austrian to plead guilty to plotting terror attack on Taylor Swift concert

Swifties try to make best of canceled Vienna shows 04:15

CBS News CBS News

The trial of a man accused of pledging allegiance toISISand plotting to attack one of superstar singerTaylor Swift's concertsin Vienna nearly two years ago has begun in Austria.

The plot was thwarted, but Austrian authorities stillcanceled Swift's three performances in August 2024. The singer's fans, known as Swifties, who had flown to Austria from across the globe to attend a performance in her record-setting Eras Tour were devastated, but rallied to turn Vienna into a citywide trading post for friendship bracelets and singalongs.

The defendant, a 21-year-old Austrian citizen known only as Beran A., in line with Austrian privacy rules, faces charges including terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization. He could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

He is being tried alongside Arda K., whose full name also has not been made public. They, along with a third man, planned to carry out simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 in the name of ISIS. Beran A. and Arda K. never carried out their attacks.

Beran A.'s defense attorney, Anna Mair, told The Associated Press on Monday that her client plans to plead guilty to most of the charges but did not specify which ones. Only Beran A. is charged in connection with the Taylor Swift plot.

He allegedly planned to target onlookers gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium – up to 30,000 each night, with another 65,000 inside the venue – with knives or homemade explosives. The suspect hoped to "kill as many people as possible," authorities said in 2024. The U.S. provided intelligence that led to the arrests.

"They were plotting to kill a huge number — tens of thousands of people at this concert, including, I am sure, many Americans — and were quite advanced in this," CIA Deputy Director David Cohen said a few weeks after the arrests. "The Austrians were able to make those arrests because the agency and our partners in the intelligence community provided them (with) information about what this ISIS-connected group was planning to do."

Beran A. also allegedly networked with other ISIS members ahead of the planned attack. Prosecutors say they discussed purchasing weapons and making bombs, and that the defendant also sought to illegally buy weapons in the days ahead of the performance. In addition, he swore allegiance to the militant group.

Authorities searched his apartment on Aug. 7, 2024 and found bomb-making materials. The concerts were scheduled to begin the next day.

Swift learned of the bomb plot while on a plane flying to Austria, according to her Eras Tour documentary.

"Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating," Swift wrote in a statement posted to Instagram two weeks later. "The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows."

The trial is being held in Wiener Neustadt, about an hour south of Vienna. The proceedings are set to continue May 12.

Prosecutors have also filed terrorism-related charges against Arda K. in the trial in connection with the plan for simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

The third man in that plot, Hasan E., allegedly stabbed a security guard with a knife at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on March 11, 2024. He was arrested and remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, Austrian prosecutors said.

Beran A. and Arda K. did not carry out their alleged plans in Turkey and the UAE. Beran A. returned to Vienna and then allegedly began plotting to attack a Swift concert there.

The Vienna plot drew comparisons toa 2017 attack by a suicide bomberat an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, that killed 22 people. The bomb detonated at the end of Grande's concert as thousands of young fans were leaving, becoming the deadliest extremist attack in the United Kingdom in recent years.

The nearly 150-show Eras Tour, which began in March 2023 and ended in December 2024, covered five continents and sold more than 10 million tickets – making it the first tour in history to surpass $1billion in ticket sales.

US-Britain-Royal Visit

Ashootingat a Washington dinner attended byPresident Donald Trumpon Saturday sparked a last-minute security review of the four-day state visit, intended to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary, and the U.S.-U.K. “special relationship.”

Buckingham Palace said the king “is greatly relieved to hear that the president, first lady and all guests have been unharmed.” After a security review, the palace said the trip “will proceed as planned.”

Trump praises the king but derides Starmer

A riftbetween the U.K. government and Trump over issues including the Iran war had already raised the political stakes for the British monarch's visit.

In recent weeks, Trump haslambasted Prime Minister Keir Starmerover his unwillingness to join U.S. military attacks on Iran, dismissing Britain’s leader as “not Winston Churchill” — the World War II prime minister who coined the phrase “special relationship” for the U.K.-U.S. bond.

It'spart of a wider riftbetween Trump and the United States’ NATO allies, whom he has called “cowards” and “useless” for not joining action against Iran. Aleaked Pentagon emailsuggested the U.S. could reassess support for the U.K.'s sovereignty over theFalkland Islandsin the south Atlantic. Britain and Argentina fought a 1982 war over the islands, also known as the Islas Malvinas.

The president insists the political chill won’t affect the royal visit. Charles “has nothing to do with that,” Trump said in March, meaning NATO.

The president has spoken in glowing terms about Charles, repeatedly referring to the monarch as his “friend” and a “great guy.”

He also continues to mention his “amazing” trip to the U.K. in September with first lady Melania Trump for anunprecedented second state visit. Starmer hand-delivered the invitation from the king in the Oval Office five weeks after the Republican president returned to office, in a very public attempt to woo the president.

The U.K. royal family laid on pomp and pageantry for the Trumps, with scarlet-clad guardsmen, brass bands and a sumptuous banquet at Windsor Castle.

“President Trump has always had great respect for King Charles, and their relationship was further strengthened by the president’s historic visit to the United Kingdom last year,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told The Associated Press. “The president looks forward to a special visit by Their Majesties, which will include a beautiful state dinner and multiple events throughout the week.”

Trump, meanwhile, told the BBC that the king’s visit could “absolutely” help repair the trans-Atlantic relationship.

“He’s fantastic. He’s a fantastic man. Absolutely the answer is yes,” the president said.

Some have called for the trip to be canceled

Kristofer Allerfeldt, a University of Exeter professor specializing in American history, said the two governments have very different objectives for the trip.

He said that for Charles, the trip is about “reinforcing long-term ties, showcasing the monarchy’s soft power and reminding the world that Britain still carries diplomatic weight.”

For Trump, it’s more about “a media event,” with emphasis on the optics of a visit that resembles a meeting of “two gilded monarchs.”

Some U.K. politicians worry that the trip is fraught with opportunities for embarrassment. Trump’s recentbroadsides at Pope Leo XIVhave heightened those concerns.

Ed Davey, leader of the U.K. centrist opposition Liberal Democrats party, earlier this month called Trump “a dangerous and corrupt gangster” and implored the government to cancel the trip.

“I really fear for what Trump might say or do while our king is forced to stand by his side,” Davey said in the House of Commons. “We cannot put His Majesty in that position.”

Starmer defended the visit, saying “the monarchy, through the bonds that it builds, is often able to reach through the decades” and bolster important relationships.

Andrew and Epstein cast a shadow

Raising the stakes is the shadow of the king’s younger brother,Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who has been stripped of his royal title of Prince Andrew, exiled from public life and put under police investigation over his friendship withJeffrey Epstein. He has denied committing any crimes.

Epstein victims have urged the king to meet with them and other sexual abuse survivors. It's unlikely he will do so.

Charles hasvisited the U.S. 19 times, but this is his first state visit to the country since becoming king in 2022.His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, made four state visits to the U.S.

The king, who is 77 and was diagnosed in early 2024 withan undisclosed form of cancer, will spend four days in the U.S. accompanied by Queen Camilla.

In Washington, the king and queen will have a private tea with the Trumps and attend a garden party and a formal White House state dinner. The president and the king will also have a one-on-one meeting.

The royal couple will also visit the Sept. 11 memorial in New York and attend a 250th birthday “block party” in Virginia, where Charles will also meet Indigenous leaders involved in nature conservation — a favorite cause of the environmentalist king.

Three centuries after Britain’s kings and queens gave up any real political power, the royals remain symbols of soft power, deployed by elected governments to smooth international relationships and send messages about what the U.K. considers important.

A key moment will be the king’s speech to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. It’s only the second time, after Queen Elizabeth II in 1991, that a U.K. monarch has addressed a joint meeting of both houses.

Elizabeth praised liberalism on that trip, spoke against the idea that “power grows from the barrel of a gun” and praised the “rich ethnic and cultural diversity of both our societies.”

The king’s treasured causes, including the environment and harmony among religious faiths, are in contrast to Trump’s. He's unlikely to accentuate differences, but Allerfeldt said that, in the monarch’s subtle way, the king could use his speech to send a message.

“He does have an unorthodox way of looking at the world, and I think maybe he can actually have something valid to say when he addresses Congress,” Allerfeldt said.
