Now that the league has officially responded, Kanter Freedom is taking his campaign to social media.
After WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told Congress that Kanter Freedom and Royce White are ineligible because they are "both men," Kanter Freedom fired back with a lengthy post asking whether the league is "transphobic."
Kanter Freedom and White both announced plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while saying that they identify as women. Kanter Freedom has said the goal is to pressure the league into explicitly limiting eligibility to biological females.
In September, a group of House Republicans led by Rep. Marlin Stutzman sent the WNBA a letter asking how it defines "women" and why the two men would not be eligible.
"With respect to your questions regarding eligibility, only women are eligible to play in the WNBA and the individuals you cite in your letter are both men," Engelbert wrote in her Oct. 16 response, via OutKick .
The letter didn't announce any new eligibility rule or define the term "women," as the original letter asked; it simply refused to take part in Kanter Freedom and White's stunt.
Kanter Freedom quickly responded to the decision from the league.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF AMERICA, THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! The @WNBA has officially responded! IS THE #WNBA TRANSPHOBIC?" Kanter Freedom wrote in a post on X.
"Apparently, the WNBA still can't define what a WOMAN is, but they're absolutely certain they know what a MAN is! How convenient!" he continued. "WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has declared that I am a man."
Kanter Freedom then posed a series of questions to the league.
"Who gave her the authority to decide who I am? Who gets to define my identity? And how can the WNBA determine who is a man without explaining what qualifies someone as a woman? Is the WNBA denying people the right to define their own gender identity?" he wrote.
"You can't have it both ways! America, read this letter for yourselves. THE WNBA HAS SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!" Kanter Freedom added.
Kanter Freedom has made it pretty clear that he does not intend to go away, as he announced plans to attend Wednesday night's Game 3 of the WNBA Finals in Atlanta, which figures to be another stunt after he was removed and banned from a WNBA arena earlier this year following a verbal altercation with a player.
